I Tried Something That Scared Me (And I'm Already Going Back)

"Stay curious, keep playing, and never be afraid to become a beginner again."

Hi Reader,

Hi friend,

I want to share a little story with you this week, a story that reminded me why stepping outside our comfort zones is so important for our creative lives.

Last week I met an old friend for coffee, and somewhere in the middle of our conversation she mentioned that she had just started learning how to sculpt and make ceramics.

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

For the rest of the week I kept wondering, What would it be like to play with clay?

So I did something about it.

I booked a pottery lesson for my niece and me, and off we went on our very first ceramics adventure.

Our instructor was incredibly kind and patient, the type of teacher who encourages you through every wobbly moment instead of making you feel like you should already know what you're doing. And trust me, there were plenty of wobbly moments.

It certainly wasn't perfect.

Halfway through the lesson, my niece's piece collapsed. For a moment, we both thought all her hard work had been lost. But with a little help and a lot of encouragement, she started again and still managed to create a beautiful bowl she was so proud of.

My bowl? Well... let's just say it ended up wonderfully crooked!

But honestly, none of that mattered.

We laughed, got our hands wonderfully messy, and enjoyed the simple joy of learning something completely new.

And now...

I'm hooked.

I've already decided I'm going back next week.

The whole experience reminded me of something I sometimes forget: there is something magical about being a beginner. When we stop worrying about getting everything right, we leave room for curiosity, discovery, and joy.

It also made me think about our own creative journeys.

When was the last time you stepped just a little outside your comfort zone?

I truly encourage you to take that small leap. It doesn't have to be pottery, it can be anything.

If you usually draw, maybe try painting.

If you love painting, perhaps experiment with collage.

If collage is your thing, pick up a handful of clay, some embroidery thread, or anything else that sparks your curiosity.

Art isn't about being perfect.

it's about staying curious.

It's about playing.

It's about experimenting.

And, above all, it's about having fun.

So this week, I hope you'll give yourself permission to try something new, even if it feels a little awkward at first. You never know what creative adventure might become your next favorite.

I'd love to hear from you. Have you tried anything new recently? Just hit reply and tell me, I always enjoy reading your stories.

Happy Creating,

Salwa
