Hi Reader,
This week was one of those weeks.
The kind where life seems determined to keep you on your toes.
One moment you’re celebrating good news. A few hours later, you hear something difficult about someone you care about. Plans work out beautifully, then something unexpected lands in your lap all woven together into the same week.
By the end of it, I felt like I’d been carried along by life’s currents, moving from one thing to the next without much time to process any of it.
So I did what I almost always do when life gets noisy.
I headed to my studio.
There’s something about making art that helps me sort through the clutter. Not because it solves anything, but because it gives my mind a place to rest and only play.
If you need a little play this week, here are nine prompts I fall back on every time.
Grab your scraps, your old magazines, your scissors and let’s mess things up on purpose.
If you’ve been craving that same kind of escape,
I pulled together my favorite collage ideas in one place.
It’s a big post, 13 ideas with examples and design secrets.
👉 13 Mixed Media Collage Art Journal Ideas (With Design Secrets)
Go read it, save it, bookmark it and once you have, come back here, because I tucked extra ideas in this email that aren’t in the post.
A little something just for my inbox crew.
- Flip the Landscape. Take a landscape for example mountains, sky, water and cut it into strips or chunks. Then play go ahead, reassemble it wrong. Put the sky at the bottom, slot a slice of ocean into the hills, turn the horizon vertical. Disorienting on purpose, and strangely beautiful.
- The torn-paper horizon. Skip images entirely. Tear strips of paper in colors that match your mood and layer them as bands across the page just like a landscape made of feelings. Where the colors meet is where it gets beautiful.
- The Calm Corner. Build one small pocket of peace anywhere on your page. A patch of soft texture, a calming word snipped from a magazine, a single pressed petal. Everything else can stay chaotic. You only need one corner to breathe.
- Play With Proportions. Break the rules of scale completely. A teacup as big as a house. A tiny figure standing under a giant flower. A moth larger than the moon. When nothing is sized “correctly,” the whole page turns dreamlike.
- Swap the Worlds. Cut a subject out of one setting and drop it somewhere it doesn’t belong. A deep-sea fish swimming through a forest. A chandelier hanging in a desert. Let the mismatch tell its own little story.
- Build a Frankenstein Creature. Combine pieces of different animals, people, or objects into one impossible new thing. A bird with a lion’s mane. A face made of petals and clock parts. Half-machine, half-garden. Let it be as odd as you like.
- Photo weaving. Take two photos or a photo and a patterned page, cut both into strips, and weave them together over and under. The two images blend into one shifting, woven surface.
- Photo + hand-drawn extension. Glue down part of a photo, then continue the scene with your own pen or paint where the photo ends. Let a photographed staircase climb into a drawn sky, or real hands hold a doodled flower.
- Black-and-white base, one color photo accent. Build your whole page from black-and-white photos, then add a single small full-color photo element. That one pop of color instantly becomes the focal point.
There’s no wrong way to do any of these. That’s the whole point.
Read the 13 ideas on the blog for the full inspiration, then come play with these nine.
If you make one, hit reply and show me. Your honest, lived-in pages are my favorite kind.
Be gentle with yourself this week.
Happy Creating,
