56 Free Summer Prompts to Fill Your Journal with Sunshine ☀️

Artful Haven

"Summer passes quickly, but the stories we create from it can stay forever."

Hi friend,

One of my favorite things about summer isn’t just the sunshine or the longer days.

It’s the way everything feels more alive.

The colors get brighter. The cafes are full. People stay out later. There are more family gatherings, more BBQs, more laughter drifting through open windows.

And in my garden, there’s another kind of excitement.

Every year I wait for my fruit trees to begin their little parade of harvests. They never all ripen at once. One tree hands the season over to the next. First loquats, then mulberries, peaches, apples, grapes, oranges, figs, and finally pomegranates.

Yesterday, it began.

We picked the very first loquats of the year. There were so many that we filled bowls for neighbors, family, and friends. Honestly, sharing them might be my favorite part.

Moments like that are exactly why I art journal.

Of course I take photos. My phone is full of them. But a photo can only capture what something looked like.

It can't capture the smell of the loquat tree warming in the sun. The feeling of reaching through the leaves to find the ripest fruit. The sweetness of that very first bite, still warm from the branch. The sticky fingers, the bowls filling up on the table, and the laughter that comes from everyone tasting the first harvest of the season together.

That's what I love about art journaling.

It helps me hold onto not just what happened, but how it felt. The flavors, the conversations, the tiny details that would otherwise slip away. And those are often the moments that become the heart of summer.

Months later, when I flip through my journal, those moments come rushing back.

That’s what inspired me to create something for you this week.

I put together 56 Summer Art Journal Prompts to help you capture this season while you’re living it, not after it’s gone.

You’ll find prompts for painting the colors of a sunset, pressing flowers from a walk, mapping a day by the water, drawing whimsical seaside villages, collecting memories from summer gatherings, and yes, celebrating all the delicious fruits and treasures the season brings.

Many of the prompts don’t even require drawing. Just use whatever supplies you already have and start where you are.

My gentle nudge this week: don’t try all 56.

Just pick one.

Give yourself a few minutes to capture something from today before it slips away.

Because summer always feels long while we’re in it and somehow it’s over in the blink of an eye.

Happy creating,

Salwa

P.S. What’s ripening in your corner of the world right now? Maybe it’s fruit from a garden, flowers on a balcony, or something special at the local market. Hit reply and tell me. I love hearing what summer looks like where you are and which prompt you’re going to try first.
